KINDRED
Design Lab — from a real problem to a real product | KINDRED
Needs, ideas, designs and builds. KINDRED Design Lab starts from problems people actually have and works forward — with the unresolved questions left visible.
What the Design Lab is
Where a problem someone actually has turns into something that can be made. Four stages, in order, with nothing skipped.
Four stages
- 01 Needs — What problem do you actually have? Problems people have run into with what already exists. Every one is linked back to the conversation or the research it came from.
- 02 Ideas — What do you wish existed? Written proposals, each with its own page. An idea is a record of demand, not a promise.
- 03 Designs — What is being worked on right now? Concepts being specified in detail. Nothing here is buyable and nothing here has a date attached.
- 04 Builds — What has actually been made? Projects that have entered prototyping or production. This is the only stage that can lead to the Shop.
Needs recorded (6)
- Charging that does not need a drawer of cables — Every device arrives with its own charging solution — USB-C, magnetic contacts, a proprietary cable, a dedicated dock. Nothing is interchangeable, so the practical result is a drawer of cables and a search every time something needs powering.
- Sizing published as measurements, not letters — Almost everything is sold in one size or three, and almost nobody publishes measurements. Two products carrying the same letter can differ by centimetres, so buying anything is guesswork.
- A lining that can be replaced — The strap outlives the lining by years. When the lining fails the whole piece is discarded, because it was never designed to come apart in the first place.
- Connectors that work across makers — Every maker uses a different fitting, so nothing is compatible with anything. Gear cannot be combined, repaired or upgraded across brands, and one broken part means one wasted object.
- Sensory pieces that can actually be washed — Silk feels right and cannot be machine washed. Coated fabric washes easily and feels wrong against the face. There is no option that is both hygienic and comfortable.
- Signals for compatibility that are not a swipe — Sharing an interest tells you almost nothing about whether two people would actually work well together. There is no good way to describe pace, communication style and boundaries before deciding whether to connect — and turning a niche community into another swipe-based app is not the answer.
Nos. Designs — empty
No active designs yet. Nothing has been taken far enough to be specified. A concept moves here only when someone is prepared to document it properly — materials, dimensions, construction and the questions that are still unanswered. KINDRED prefers an empty stage to a fabricated one.
04. Builds — empty
Nothing has entered production. No KINDRED project has been prototyped or made. When something is, this is where it appears — with what was actually built, what it cost and what it got wrong. Until then, the Shop has nothing in it either.
Ideas (6)
- A collar I can re-line instead of replacing — The strap outlives the lining by years. A lining that could be swapped out — a few euros instead of a whole new piece — would change how long one object lasts.
- Standard interchangeable connectors — Every maker uses a different fitting, so nothing is compatible with anything. If connectors were standard, one set of cuffs could work with any strap.
- A blindfold that is genuinely washable — Silk feels right and cannot be machine washed. Coated fabric washes easily and feels cheap. Something that washes hot and still feels good against the face.
- Published measurements, not vague sizes — S, M, L tells me nothing. I want actual measurements, weight and hardware specs on every listing so I can compare two products without guessing.
- A charging tray for the whole collection — A dedicated storage and charging station that lets multiple devices charge at the same time without searching for individual cables.
- Better signals for compatibility — A way to share useful signals about communication style, boundaries, relationship expectations and pace without turning a niche community into another swipe-based dating app.
